Abstract:
The article examines a diplomatic mission of Alberto Vimina to Russia in the 17th century. In 1655, Alberto Vimina (1603–1667) visited Russia representing the interests of Venetian Republic, which was looking for an ally in Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich in the fight against the Ottoman Empire at a time when Russian-Polish war was going on. In anticipation of the audience, Vimina spent half a year in Russia, describing his stay in various Russian cities and negotiations he held in letters to the ambassador of Venetian Republic in Vienna, Giovan Battista Nani. Vimina was received in Russia by the local authorities coordinated by Posolskij Prikaz with personal control of Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich. The mission of Vimina undertaken on his initiative did not achieve the main goal and was reported in different ways in Russian and Italian sources. The structure of text is determined by communicative aim, and as a result it’s a description of the reality that should appear before the addressee of report. At the same time, it reflects specifics of the diplomatic service in Russia and in Venetian Republic and the work of local authorities of Russia in difficult historical conditions.
