Abstract:

The hermeneutic work consists of twelve essays on the unexplored literary features of some Old Russian works from the 11th to the beginning of the 18th centuries. The first article reviews the subject-pictorial motifs in the Sermon on Law and Grace by Metropolitan Hilarion. The second article reveals the relationship of author of the Tale of Boris and Gleb to Prince Boris as a secular character. The third is a note on the nature of depiction of the Tale of Bygone Years. The fourth essay draws attention to the Old Russian associations to the concept of “East.” The fifth article discusses the image of the other world in the Walking of the Virgin through the Torments according to the list of 1602. The sixth essay concerns the people’s image in the manuscript patericon collection of 1628. In the seventh article, an attempt was made to transfer the Tale of Timothy of Vladimir from the 15th century on the basis of work’s poetics for the second half of the seventeenth century. The eighth article analyzes the literary processing of the Tale of the Battle of Mamaev in the list of 1689. The ninth essay tells about the subject-everyday background of the early printed Prologue of 1696. The tenth note examines the clownish Tale of the Portuguese Embassy of the early 18th century. The eleventh note tells about the appearance of Vasily the Golden-haired in the story of the same name according to the list of the first half of the 18th century. The work ends with the twelfth article — the formulation of the problem of the typology of Old Russian manuscript collections of non-permanent composition from the point of poetics’ view.
