Abstract: Why study the pictoriality of Old Russian texts, if the authors worked mainly on the embodiment of ideas? It all depends on the tasks that literary historians have set themselves. A new task at present is the construction of the history of Old Russian literature according to the degree of literature and the richness of the artistic meaning of its texts — individual works and collections, manuscripts and early printed. Such a value approach (though it is not to everyone) completely changes the general picture of Old Russian literature as a kind of “space” composed of works in contact with the literary center of literature, more often with less literary margins and even more often with almost non-literary surroundings. We proceed from the idea that according to the degree of literature and to the addition of the hidden meaning, Old Russian descriptions of various kinds are divided into three categories: 1) expressive — with a harmonious form and composition; 2) pictorial — with the subject details that the author associates as a whole object and whole quality; 3) figurative — when the author transfers the features of one object to a completely different object. Such descriptions are reinforced, brighter and more meaningful by the non-traditional actions of the author and the emotionality of his presentation. In this case, we will only talk about collections as literary texts-monuments.
