Abstract: In Vita of his teacher Abraham, Ephrem, a hagiographer of Smolensk at the turn of 13th century, uses texts of Nestor, Ephrem the Syrian, Life of John Chrysostom, Life of Anthony the Great, Life of Sabbas the Sanctified, the collection The Golden Chain, Teaching of the Spiritual Father to the Spiritual Son. The purpose of the article is to trace how exactly the texts listed above are used by the Smolensk hagiographer and what functions they perform in the Life being created.
