Abstract: Narrations about the conquest of Smolensk by the force of Vasili III in the chronicles of the 16th–17th centuries have the forms of short records and military stories. The stories, written in the 16th century, with varying details, from different points of view and in different stylistic manners reveal the course of events. A brief records in the chronicles of the following time express only the meaning of events, distant in time and obviously obscured to the chroniclers by the later history of the city.
