Abstract: The essay explores historical and chronological circumstances of the creation and rewritings of the Old Russian literary monument of the 13th century “The tale of the Russian land’s bane” and  proposes explanations for such “dark” terms as “the bane” and “the illness” consistent with the worldview of Christian people in medieval Russia and their doomsday-awaiting mindset.
